Vacation Home Rents is a vacation rental service that helps users find and compare rental options across listing websites. Their primary user base likely consists of travelers, families, and business people looking to go on vacation on a budget and who like to do their research before booking anything. Although the startup already has a desktop site, it doesn't currently have a mobile app. We think the mobile format would make accessing the site easier and more convenient for users and would also appeal to people away from their computer and out in public.
Create a mobile user interface for Vacation Home Rents that will accomplish the company's primary purpose.
Each of us started the design process by individually sketching the core features and pages that are necessary for carrying out the startup's vision. We then presented our designs to each other and chose parts that made sense to integrate into the interface.
We developed our sketches into a low-fi prototype with the key features that we wanted to include.
The low-fi prototype was used as a template to create the hi-fi prototype. The initial hi-fi prototype included a search page along with recommendations for places to travel. Upon searching for a location, it brings up a list of options based on listings from websites like Airbnb, Vrbo, and Expedia. Clicking on a website reveals information like the rating, reviews, accommodations, number of beds, and more. We also included a page where the user can view individual reviews. The booking process is as simple as selecting the move-in and move-out dates and number of guests. An estimated subtotal is automatically generated for the user, and the final step redirects the user to the actual booking site to finalize the transaction.
We presented our initial prototype to a panel of fellow classmates and an industry professional. They identified several key areas of improvement, summarized below.
After modifying our prototype based on the feedback from the critique, we sent the prototype to a group of user testers and asked them to answer questions about the usability and design of the interface.
